Pediatric Speech-Language Therapy at MVPT, BangorĀ

Speech Therapy

What Is Speech-Language Therapy?

Pediatric Speech-Language Therapy (often just called ā€œspeech therapyā€) is a type of specialized service provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). SLPs are specially trained and licensed medical professionals who work to evaluate, diagnose, and treat speech disorders, oral-motor delays, and communication challenges. At MVPT, Bangor, we provide speech therapy services to infants, children, and young adults and create an individualized treatment plan utilizing evidence-based practice to meet the needs of our clients and their family.

Each childā€™s unique needs and what their treatment plan will include varies significantly. For this reason, a large part of treatment success relies on building a strong relationship between the speech therapist and our client and their loved ones. We believe in involving parents, families, and guardians in the therapy process as much as possible to ensure the carry-over of skills into the home, school, and community settings.

Our Speech-Language Therapy Services at MVPT, Bangor

The treatment program for a speech and language therapy session is as unique as each patient, so no two sessions or treatment plans look the same. From brightly colored toys and bubbles to oral tools that can be used at home, your SLP will help guide the process and answer all your questions. Parent or caregiver participation is encouraged and is vital for skill progression.

What does a speech therapy session look like?

Depending on the age and ability of the client, the types of activities can vary significantly. A typical therapy session for a young child often looks more like play than work! Your clinician will explain the goals and purpose-driven play and how you can carry over similar scaffolded play at home. A session with an older child, teen, or adult may focus on more structured therapy targeting specific communication needs and may look like conversational practice, use of visual supports and books, following directions, written practice, or watching videos. Our skilled clinicians always make each session meaningful and a fun learning process to help patients progress toward reaching their goals.

How long do speech therapy sessions last?

As each clientā€™s needs are so different, session lengths and times vary. Many sessions are 30 to 60 minutes in length and vary from 1 to several sessions per week. Oftentimes, one session per week is not enough to make the desired progress, and goals can be achieved sooner with more frequent visits. Discharge from services typically occurs when goals are met or the child/family and SLP agree feel adequate progress has been made and skills can be continued independently.
